Fountains Abbey

As mentioned previously, we stayed at Fountains Abbey over the bank holiday weekend - a really nice place.

It's a UNESCO World Heritage site, the second one we've visited in less than a year (we went to Angkor Wat, Cambodia last December).

The abbey itself dates from the 12th Century, and went through ups and downs in fortune before falling foul of Henry VIII's dissolution of the monastries.

Whilst the abbey itself consists only of ruins, there is also the only surviving Cistercian corn mill to visit, and a fascinating display about monastic life.
