Blackberry way

We've got some blackberry bushes on our allotment.  As we inherited them from the previous tenant, they are effectively free food - especially as they don't take any looking after, just need to be kept clipped back.

I picked loads of them last week, then I had to work out what to do with them all - my fermentation bucket was occupied with apricot wine, so making wine was out, at least for the time being.

I made some blackberry jam:

I'm still learning about jam making, and this batch was a bit firmer than I'd like, but not too bad - it's nice on some toast for my breakfast.

I also made blackberry vodka:

I just added blackberries to vodka, and let it steep for a few days - I've not started distilling vodka as well, although it might be an idea for when the potatoes are harvested :-)

There's plenty more blackberries to be picked, so I'm sure I'll be finding more things to do with them - there's always that good old standby blackberry and apple crumble!

  1. I found some sloes in a hedgerow yesterday and made a jar of blackberry and sloe jam. It has set rather firmly though. Must keep working on this one!! Debating going back for more sloes to make some sloe gin.
