I was shocked and saddened to hear at the weekend the news of the death of Mike Smith.
He was one of those presenters who always seemed to be around during the 1980s - from co-presenting The Late Late Breakfast Show with Noel Edmonds, presenting the quiz That's Showbusiness, being one of the hosts of Live Aid, in addition to presenting the Radio 1 Breakfast Show from 1986 - 1988, not forgetting his wonderful performance along with his wife Sarah Greene on the spoof documentary Ghostwatch, aired on Hallowe'en 1992.
After his broadcasting career came to an end, he used his love of helicopters to found the company Flying TV, which provided aeriel footage to broadcasters, with his work being seen on many popular television shows.
In addition, Smith was an avid fan of motor racing, competing in the British Touring Car Championships in the late 1980s.
His death leaves a hole in the world of broadcasting, as well as taking a little bit of my childhood.
