Much has been written in the last few days about the sentence given to Oscar Pistorius. There has been debate about the amount of time he will potentially spend in prison, which may be as little as 10 months before he is placed on house arrest, as well as the ongoing comments about what actually happened on the night of the shooting.
In amongst all the comments about Pistorius’s fall from grace, his conduct at the trial and his sentence, someone has been forgotten.
A woman, successful in her chosen field, with her life ahead of her.
She was a model, which apparently meant that newspapers could print photos of her wearing next to nothing alongside the story of her shooting. Not a person, just a body and an image to put in the front page to sell newspapers.
A woman, forgotten in the media scrum around Pistorius.
A woman, reduced to the status of “victim”.
A woman who, in many articles was not even given a name.
Her name was Reeva Steenkamp.
