I'm adding my voice to the many people paying tribute to Anne Kirkbride, the actress who brought Deirdre Barlow to life for over 40 years.
I've never known a time when Anne wasn't on the cobbles of Coronation Street, she was part of some of the best known storylines during her time on the Street.
Among her most notable storylines were her affair with Mike Baldwin - gaining much press coverage, with the end of the affair and reconciliation with Ken Barlow being announced on the Old Trafford scoreboard during a Manchester United match - "Ken and Deirdre reunited. Ken 1 - Mike 0".
A few years later came Dierdre's relationship with Jon Lindsay - Lindsay posed as an airline pilot whilst implicating Dierdre in his various financial scams. Dierdre was famously imprisoned despite knowing nothing of Lindsay's antics. The resulting "Free The Weatherfield One" campaign even attracted the attention of then Prime Minister Tony Blair!
Dierdre's life eventually came full circle, as she re-married Ken.
Anne's personal life had it's own share of ups and downs, being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1993, the diagnosis leading to Anne suffering from depression.
Anne Kirkbride died on 19th January, just 2 days before the National Television Awards. The organisers of the awards announced that William Roache, who plays Ken Barlow, would lead tributes to Anne during the show.
