Built as a fortified manor house in the 12th century by Alain de Parrhoet, la Zouch, the castle was extended over the years, before becoming Crown property in 1461.
The castle was a Royalist stronghold in the civil war, providing a link between Royalist areas in the southwest and the north.
The castle also achieved later fame as a result of Ashby-De-La-Zouch being featured in Walter Scott's Ivanhoe, published in 1819.
Some views from atop the tower - 98 steps up!!
Well worth a visit.
