People with depression are not dangerous

Over the last few days, much has been made of Andreas Lubitz - the pilot of the Germanwings flight that crashed into the Alps - being on medication for depression.

Let us be clear, the crash was a tragic event, and my heart goes out to the families of the passengers and crew on that flight.

However, to demonise depression sufferers (as various sources have sought to do), and to stigmatise depression as a dangerous illness is not helpful.

Many people with depression are able to maintain normal lives, and are not driven to take the lives of other people.

We will never know what went through the mind of Andreas Lubitz as the flight made its fatal descent, we will never know what drove him to take the path he did.

But, let's not use this tragedy as an excuse to further discriminate against people with mental illnesses.
